The Special Investigations Division is comprised of the Street Crimes Unit, the Major Narcotics Unit, Strategic Investigations Unit and Nuisance Abatement. The Division utilizes proactive policing techniques to reduce part one crime, eradicates all levels of drug/vice activity and is responsive to community concerns and needs. The Division also works in partnership with federal, state and local agencies in a variety of criminal investigations to include money laundering, organized crime and homeland security.

STREET CRIMES UNIT:
The Street Crimes Unit is comprised of multiple teams of detectives that provide coverage to the entire City of Fort Lauderdale on all three shifts. Groups of detectives are assigned to specific zones and held responsible for the level of crime in their areas. All detectives proactively work narcotics, vice, burglary and robbery trends in conjunction with the Criminal Investigations Division and other local police departments. They conduct undercover operations, buy/bust, reverse stings, vehicle decoys and other proactive policing techniques. They utilize and cultivate confidential informants, author search warrants, address citizen complaint and develop creative methods to reduce crime.

MAJOR NARCOTICS UNIT:
The Major Narcotics Unit is comprised of multiple detectives handle narcotics investigation at all levels of a criminal enterprise. They are members of High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) and conduct undercover joint operations in conjunction with several local, state and federal agencies.

STRATEGIC INVESTIGATIONS UNIT:
The Strategic Investigations Unit is comprised of several detectives, each individually assigned to task forces in a variety of jurisdictions at the federal, state and local levels. Their responsibilities vary according to their task force assignment and the nature of their tasks are considered confidential.

NUISANCE ABATEMENT:
The purpose of the Nuisance Abatement Board is to promote, protect and improve the health, safety and welfare of the citizens by imposing administrative fines and other non criminal penalties in order to provide an equitable, expeditious, effective and inexpensive method of enforcing ordinances under circumstances when pending or a repeated violation continues to exist with a problem property.

The Nuisance Abatement Board Is an advisory board of the City of Fort Lauderdale consisting of 5 volunteers from the community who are appointed by the City Commission. Those involved in the Nuisance Abatement process are the Nuisance Abatement Clerk, the City Prosecutor, a consulting attorney, and court reporter.

The Nuisance Abatement’s goals and objectives are to obtain full compliance of abated properties with City ordinances. The SID detective and Liaison work closely with property owners to ensure full compliance. Visit the Nuisance Abatement Page.
